A Happy Glucose Holiday Season

Clay Clark

Clay Clark – @biochemprof I'm on ScienceSeeker-Microscope

If you don’t believe in pathways, you might want to listen. Each year in his biochemistry class, Dr. Jim Knopp sings “the glucose song.” This year, he had special visitors from Ladies in Red, an all-female a cappella group associated with the Music Department at NCSU.

To kick off the holiday season, please enjoy The Glucose Song, as sung by Ladies in Red.

To see the lyrics:

To be sung to the tune of  “Grandma got run over by a reindeer”

Dr. Knopp got run over by a glucose
going home late Sunday afternoon
You may say there’s no such thing as pathways
but as for me and my classmates, we believe.

He’d been eating too much sugar
from A-T-Ps was all a glow.
So, he picked up all the papers
and rushed out in the newly fallen snow.

When they found him Monday morning
at the scene of the attack,
There were enzymes and cofactors
and incriminating substrates on his back.

Dr. Knopp got run over by a glucose
going home late Sunday afternoon
You may say there’s no such thing as pathways
but as for me and my classmates, we believe.

Now we’re so proud of all our T-As
as they took the news with class.
See them drinking all at Mitch’s
that they no longer have those questions up the [hmmmmmmmmmmm].

It’s not the same without our teacher.
there are things we want to ask.
Like “What the heck is pyruvate?”
and “How am I ever going to pass this class?”

Dr. Knopp got run over by a glucose
going home late Sunday afternoon.
You may say there’s no such thing as pathways
but as for me and my classmates, we believe.
